HUNTING A PERSON was one of the strangest sensations in the world. It was thrilling and exhilarating, knowing that in just a few moments, he would be taking down his prey. Yet, this time there was a different edge to the stalk, knowing the woman he was intrigued by was only a few feet behind him.

Taking down a fugitive was one of his favorite parts of the job, but if Kendra was put in harm’s way...

Trent moved faster through the crowd, hoping to create more distance between them while still not making it obvious that he was trying to leave her behind. Kendra likely wouldn’t take being left in the lurch well—even if he was doing it to protect her. She’d grown up in a world of militants and violence, so she wasn’t new to his world, but it was another thing entirely to see him take down a fugitive in the middle of an American park on a warm early-summer day with kids running around while chomping on shaved ice. He had to be careful.

The festival had a hometown feel, complete with the scent of hot dogs cooking on the grill mixed with the warm, yeasty odor of spilled beer. If he took down Senator Clark, he wasn’t sure who would look bad—the senator or himself. He’d probably be caught on someone’s camera phone doing the grab, and the senator still had fans in the public. He’d be lucky if a well-meaning passerby didn’t jump into the fray and try to kick his ass in an effort to protect the pol.

He moved around the side of the man, careful to keep out of sight lines until the last moment. He wanted to take him by surprise to lower the chances of violent resistance. There didn’t need to be a scene. If things went as he hoped, Senator Clark would come along willingly, without him needing to place him in cuffs or take him to the ground at all.

Approaching, he could make out the back of the man’s blue polo shirt. He was talking to a woman and gesticulating with his hands to drive home whatever point he must have been making. The woman looked like she had been prisoner to the man’s tirade for far too long. If nothing else, at least Trent could save this woman from further annoyance.

As he stepped within a few arm lengths of the man, he paused. As of yet, he had barely caught a glimpse of the fellow’s face. Kendra had seemed to think this was definitely the senator, but now that he was closer, he could make out the man’s well-kept beard. It wasn’t long, but the man he and Tripp had posted for had been clean shaven and the type who went to nail salons for manicures and hadn’t stepped into an ordinary barbershop in his entire life.

If we’ve been following the wrong man...

He nearly shook his head, but then a part of him secretly hoped that they had made a mistake and were going after the wrong person.
